Join us in Burien for this Year’s WCA Winter Social! For the entire day we have informative presentations, library resources, exhibitions and social gatherings coordinated just for you! The Library and Exhibitions are all walking distance from each other. The Winter Social at Moshier Arts Center is a five minute drive away! We hope you will gain helpful information from the presentations at the library and be inspired by the work of your fellow WCA members!

10:00-11:00am Dave Waddell: Hazards in the Arts- Expert Dave Waddell will lead us through an image presentation on protecting yourself from exposure to harmful materials associated with working in clay and glaze materials. Learn how to identify less toxic products, ways to keep your studio’s air clean and how to protect yourself from harmful exposures. This will be the last free, open-to-the-public talk that Dave will be giving on “Hazards in the Arts”!!! Take advantage of this sure to be humorous, information-packed presentation!

11:15-12:30 Artist Trust: Katy Hannigan- Want to learn more about applying for grants? Katy Hannigan, of Artist Trust will share on this topic with information geared towards artists working in clay. Come learn about: Reading and interpreting calls for grant proposals, the components of a grant application (artist statement, project description, budget, resume/ CV and work samples), and upcoming opportunities provided through Artist Trust. Be sure to bring your notebook to capture tips and tricks for best practices in applying for grants!

1:30-2:30 Experiencing SOFA Chicago: Art Work by George Rodriguez- Local sculptor and recent Artist Trust Fellowship recipient, George Rodriguez, will share an image presentation on his work and recent experience at SOFA Chicago with Foster White Gallery. He will speak about his work in the context of working with a gallery, his involvement at SOFA, his studio practice and thoughts on working as an artist making large scale, ceramic objects.

2:30-3:30 Travels in Turkey: Carol Gouthro- Enjoy images of Carols intense, colorful, highly-detailed earthenware sculpture! She will explain how she draws from visual influences and builds ideas for her forms and surfaces. Take in her thrilling stories since she recently exhibited, taught, and explored Turkey! Iznik ceramic work is know for its patterns and color- come see it in person! She will have samples of ceramic work she collected while based in Istanbul, Turkey.

3:30-4:30 Public Art Projects: Cappy Thompson & Claudia Fitch- These two local artists have successfully installed their permanent public art projects all over the Seattle area and beyond! Come hear about their successes and struggles in navigating this competitive, multi-faceted field. Each will share their personal experience by relating stories and showing images. This will be followed by questions moderated by George Rodriguez. We will close with questions and discussion with the audience.

Winter Social and Potluck 6-8pm!

The WCA is pleased to collaborate with Moshier Arts Center for our annual winter social this January! Moshier is a glistening example of a community studio, bustling with classes and cheerful staff that believe in opportunities for their members! At the social the WCA will offer awards for the juried exhibitions and have a rousing game of ceramic trivia MC’ed by George Rodriguez! Our jurors Kristin Schimik and Sam Scott will be present to hand out the awards. Offer your round of applause for your fellow artists and brush up on fun facts about your favorite past-time: CERAMICS!!! The social will be from 6-8pm. Please bring a dish and or beverage to share for the potluck table! Pick up your shiny new WCA poster at the Winter Social as well! *ALSO: Bring a wrapped piece of your ceramic art for the traditional and highly entertaining Gift Swap! (optional).
